Derek & May's wedding 28 Feb 2005

We came back from Hong Kong last Wednesday after attending Derek & May's wedding there. I did a lot of power-shopping in Hong Kong given we were only there for 4 days. Hong Kong never disappoints in the retail therapy department. I took full advantage of the 75% off sale and snagged a lot of coats and jackets in readiness for Melbourne winter. OK, Enough about me and my shopping, now, Derek & May's wedding...

Hong Kong weddings are quite interesting (coming from a non-Chinese person). The ceremony began with the groom and his "brothers" (around 10 close male friends including the groomsmen) arriving at the hotel where the bride and her "sisters" were patiently waiting. The fun kicks in when the groom (with the help of his "brothers") were asked to participate in a series of "tests" to prove his worthiness to formally see the bride. Some of the tests included Derek dressing up as May and re-enacting his marriage proposal in accordance to a script written by the "sisters." Rumour has it that Derek's original attempt did not rate high on the romantic barometer... After some attempt by the groom at singing, chanting promises of what he would do and refrain from doing, some skipping exercise on rocks(to prove his endurance?)the bride was finally led out by her father to meet the groom. The couple then offered tea to their parents and new in-laws and then it was off to another location to legalise the whole affair in front of a government appointed celebrant! The legal side of the wedding was held at Derek's family house. After what seemed like a 3 minute exchange of vows by the happy couple in front of family and friend - but more importantly the celebrant, the happy couple were finally married! The wedding reception was held at the lush Conrad Hotel and guests were treated to the usual 10 course banquet.

Congrats again Derek & May, wishing you both a fun-filled journey with a lot of blessed memories.
