Alyssa: Yung and I went to watch the movies Apocalypto and Babel on the weekend. I found Apocalypto to be very violent and a bit too gory for my liking. The movie is set in Mexico towards the end of the Mayan civilization. It depicts jungle savagery where a small tribe is ambushed by Mayan warriors and taken away from the jungle to become slaves/ human sacrifice to the Mayan gods. The movie is full of adrenalin as the main character manages to escape back to the jungle and is chased by the warriors for a good part of the movie. And yes, I suppose there is a deep and philosophical element to the movie (after all, it is directed by Mel Gibson) but I won’t bother going into details as I think the violence overshadows any other theme this movie intends to promote.
As for the movie Babel, irritation is the word that best described my emotion. This is one movie which I do not understand what the hype is all about. Yung & I found it as boring as bat shit and it was so slow moving. In a nut shell, the story starts with 2 wanton Moroccan children sitting on a mountain herding their goats when they decided to shoot at a tour bus passing by to test out how far their rifle can reach. One of the American tourists on the bus (Cate Blanchett) gets hit and from there, a roller coaster ride of cause and effect takes place around the world. The theme is interesting but the delivery just doesn’t do it justice. The acting by Pitt and Blanchett was really standard (so much for all those Golden Globe nominations). Maybe I’m a harsh critic or I just wasn’t in the mood for that sort of movie. Sigh. I can’t wait for the new Harry Potter movie to come out – now that’s a movie that guarantees enjoyment for a big kid like me!
