Base Camp: Daylesford/Hepburn Springs

Alyssa: We were at it again this weekend - base camping at Daylesford & Hepburn Springs (aka Spa Country). Daylesford and the neighbouring suburb of Hepburn Springs are Victoria's day spa destination due to the abundance of natural mineral springs found in the area. For this reason, the place is a popular weekend getaway destination for yuppy Melbournites to indulge in a bit of pampering at the numerous day spas in the area. However, our mission this time 'round was bushwalking(and not spa treatments as we usually get ourselves into!) and so we embarked on another trip with what's becoming our favourite hiking club - the YHA Bushwalking Club.

We were blessed with good weather for a nice summer bush walk covering a total of 18km of track over Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Our base camp trip was with a smaller crowd with 6 people in total. We've noticed that these organised bush walks usually attract people from all walks of life (no puns intended)so we had a great time getting to know our fellow walkers and their interesting lives.

The track around Daylesford was quite easy - or maybe its because we're used to the routine by now! After the first days' walk we had some free time to either take a dip in the lake at the camp site or visit the local mineral spa pools. We chose the latter option (after all - we were in Spa Country) and felt very revitalised (and clean!) for a good night's sleep before facing another day of hiking.

Spending a weekend away certainly does wonders for the psyche as it makes the weekend feel longer and provides great unintentional exercise! So there you go - a cheap alternative to a holiday without spending too much dosh and good for your health at the same time!

Wow that looks like fun, I wonder if they have something like for families with kids? I bet the kids would love it. Mai

camping is so much fun! We saw heaps of families camping with their little ones so I'm sure there would be organised camps around catering for families.

I wish we would go camping. Would you believe that Tung is the princess in this regard and refuses to camp based on his past experiences!

Camping can be a feral pursuit - but that's all part of the fun! Although we certainly appreciate the luxury of a nice hot shower after a weekend of roughin' it in the bush!
