Holidaying in Singapore & Phuket

Yung: We recently came back from our 2 weeks break in Singapore and Thailand. Our holiday started off on the wrong foot with a flight delay, leaving us stranded at the Qantas Club with Matty for most of the first day. As a result we landed in Singapore around midnight as opposed to the scheduled 6pm - lucky for us Matty was oblivious to all the delay and didn't give us any grief at all during that day.

Our trip to Singapore coincided with the "Great Singapore Sale". We visited the sale season a few years back but this time round it seemed the sale wasn't all that great. Still, we managed nevertheless to buy a heap of stuff !! We also spent a lot of time catching up with Sean and Margie and their little boy Leeuwin who wasn't even born the last time we visited Singapore. Not much has really changed in Singapore, the humidity, Orchard Rd, Hawker Stores, Chilli and Black Pepper Crabs....

After a busy week in Singapore, we were looking forward to a relaxing week in Phuket. Unfortunately as we left Changi airport, it was a case of deja-vu...more flight delays! What made things more tricky was the fact that we had to fly to Bangkok for our connecting flight to Phuket. What was installed for us when arriving at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport truly resembled a scene from the "Amazing Race". Suvarnabhumi airport must be one of the largest but most inefficient airports in Asia. Too many queues and check points, and when we asked where the transit gates were to Phuket we were met with the following response "head down this section for 1km and then turn right". Are you kidding me..1km ??..and no rail or bus transfers either...just a combination of travelators and fast paced walking! Lucky for us we "just" made our connecting flight to Phuket. Full marks goes to Matty though, if it wasn't for his easy traveling manners I think we would have given up back when we left Singapore.

So after a hectic day messing around at airports, we finally arrived in Phuket late into the night and boy were we glad to see the resort driver waiting to greet us. Believe it or not our airport dramas didn't completely end there as Alyssa's luggage missed the connecting flight !

This time round in Phuket we chose to stay at the Sala Phuket Resort which is situated on the northern side of the island. The Sala Resort is a rather niche resort specialising in private pool villa type accommodation (as opposed to hotel style rooms). The dining experience was magnificent and the service was impeccable - the best we've experienced anywhere. We spent a few occasions shopping for artifacts and shopping generally at the Phuket shopping centres, but most of the time we were just chilling out in our resort. Its interesting we originally thought we'd have an easier time with Matty at the resort than in bustling Singapore, but it actually turned out quite the opposite. In Singapore Matty was just happy sitting in his stroller cruising around shopping centres all day long, but at the resort he got restless and bored very easily. As a result he really kept us on our toes all day long, and we didn't get a chance to utilise the resort facilities as much as we would like. Lucky for us our villa was magnificent, and we were happy just to stay within our compound most of the time.

No more resort holidays for Matty. I think hectic is better for this little active munchkin...maybe New York next time?
